Volunteer: Mentors Needed!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Chattahoochee Valley is a one-to-one youth mentoring organization that pairs a child with an adult volunteer, but sadly we have a waiting list of close to a hundred children waiting to be matched with a positive adult role model like YOU! We are looking for men and women to become Big Brothers and Big Sisters to a child in our community. We ask that our Big Brothers and Big Sisters spend time with the Little at least a couple of times a month, and we encourage the Bigs to incorporate the Little’s hobbies as well as their own into fun inexpensive activities. For more information, please contact Erica Lee at 706-327-3760 or at elee@bbbschattvalley.org.

Volunteer: Kindergarten Readiness (Reading Buddies)

Literacy Alliance are looking for volunteers to spend one hour, one morning per each week helping children learn to read. This program is 8 weeks long and does not require volunteers to have an educational certificate/degree. Volunteers must complete the orientation (one hour duration) prior to participating in the program.

There is a fall session (September-November) and spring session (January-March). Orientation for new volunteers will be held at the Columbus Public Library on Tuesday, July 20th and an August date TBD. The next session will begin September 11th - November 3rd.

Contact Brandy Tolbert at volunteer@theliteracyalliance.org or by phone at 229-232-0237 (Cell) or 706-748-2610 (Office) for more information.

Volunteer: Dictionary Project - Label and Packaging

Join us July 20th, for 2-3 hours as we get dictionaries ready for the "Class of 2027".  Each year MCSD third grade students are presented with this very important tool and a message about graduating on time and one day getting a job that they will love.

We need volunteers to help with two activities this day:

1- to label these beautiful dictionaries and place them, along with a pen, in a gift bag. We start when the doors open at 10:00 am at the Columbus Public Library on Macon Rd. in the CB&T/Synovus rooms.

2- to transport them to our office near Columbus Regional. We need vans, pickup trucks, and just about anything that can haul some boxes. The boxes weigh no more than 10 pounds.  There should be enough to start transporting by 10:45.

Literacy Alliance thanks the Rotary Club of Columbus, club #4119. Without their years of support this program would not be possible.

Volunteer: Animal Foster Parent Volunteer

Be a hero and save a life by becoming a foster parent to one of our animals. Puppies and kittens cannot live in the shelter until after they are weaned, have had two rounds of vaccines and are big enough to be spayed or neutered. Some adult animals are shy and need time in a calm home environment where they gain the confidence to interact with the public. Other animals may be recovering from a broken bone, heart worm treatment, or a skin condition and need a quiet and safe environment until they get well. Foster parents give these animals the time they need to become viable adoption candidates.

Usually, the foster period is anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the size and situation of the animal. Paws Humane provides the veterinary care for the animal being fostered as well as items needed for caring for the animal.

If you are interested in becoming a Foster Parent Volunteer, please respond to this need.

Volunteer: Paws Community Outreach Leader

Paws Humane is dedicated to educating the public on pet overpopulation issues and the importance of spay/neuter, proper pet care, safe dog interaction, and more. We bring dogs to visit elementary schools, give presentations, and also host groups of children here at Paws.

We need dedicated volunteers who love to interact with people to become a Community Outreach Leader. We always have events going on that we need these leaders to supervise. Some examples are attending an Hispanic outreach event to share with them our low cost services, providing a humane education presentation to kids at school, or distributing low/cost or free program flyers to people in underserved neighborhoods. We need these leaders to be someone we can rely on and who would like to volunteer with Paws for the long run.

If you are interested in becoming a Paws Community Outreach Leader, please respond to this need.
